Our society functions as a democracy which means by definition that the people rule. We exercise this power by voting and electing officials that represent us to the government. These representatives go in our stead to legislate and reflect the beliefs of those that voted for them. The main assignment of these people is to help pass or help reject laws. In an ever changing society, it is important that our government and the rules that affect us all are constantly changing to reflect the majority opinion. It is our responsibility as citizens to hold our representatives accountable for the decision they make that are an extension of our own decisions. So in order to perform our duty just like we expect them to perform theirs it is important that we stay up to date on the laws and bills going through our government system.
These are a couple of bills currently being proposed and decided on…
1. Marijuana- HB 0197
This bill redefines “marijuana” to exclude low-THC content cannabis oil for use as a medicine for multiple ailments that include cancer, alzheimer's, and epilepsy.
2. Abortion- HB 0977
This bill revises and deletes certain portions of provisions set in place by the Planned Parenthood of Middle TN v. Sundquist. One focal point of this bill is that a doctor performing an abortion has a legal obligation to try to save the fetus if it is still viable outside of the womb at the time of the abortion.
3. Firearms- HB 0596
This bill requires that any person convicted for the unlawful sale, gift, or loaning of a firearm to a minor or an intoxicated person be held criminally responsible for any resulting crime. They are not tried as an accomplice but an equal party in the crime. They take on the exact same sentence as the one who committed the crime with no chance of parole.
